Maggie Smith: Principal

I attended college at St. Benedict and the University of Minnesota. I received my Masters of Religious Education from St. Thomas.  I am presently working towards an Education Specialist degree at St. Thomas.  I was a St. Joseph school teacher for 20  years. I taught at St. Mary's in Waverly and St. Peter's in Delano. I have been Principal at this wonderful school for 2 years. My hope is to help all children grow in the love of God. I am a product of the Catholic school system.

Dahri Nelson: Nurse

I am a Registered Nurse and this is my second year working at St. Joe's in the school health office. I went to college at Mankato State and University of South Dakota. I graduated from USD.  I have worked in many different areas of nursing including Pediatrics, Same Day Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Rehab, Urgent Care and Emergency Room prior to working for District 110 health services.

This is my 13th year of teaching, my 7th at St. Joseph. I have taught grades 3,2,1 and K. I graduated from the The College of St. Benedict with a BS in Elementary Education. I attended a Catholic grade school and high school (12 years of wearing plaid!) I love teaching and am continually inspired by my kids and their enthusiasm for learning and life!  My family are members of St. Joseph Parish.  Our three children are graduates of St. Joseph School.

After teaching in second grade for the past two years at St. Joseph School, I am now teaching first grade.  I also taught first grade at St. Peter's School in Delano and I know it is a huge growing year.  It is very rewarding to me to see and be part of the unbelievable growth made throughout the first grade year. I look forward to another year of teaching at St. Joseph School, and helping the little ones grow in their faith. My husband and I are members of St. Joseph's Parish.

Virginia Gelhar: 2nd Grade

I have been teaching second grade at St. Joe’s for 22 years. I did my undergraduate work at St. Cloud and then received my Masters Degree in Reading Education from St. Thomas. I work closely with the Faith Formation director in doing the sacramental program for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. I also run special activities at St. Joe’s, including the summer reading program, book clubs, books and bagels, and organize other enrichment activities (i.e. chess club). You will also usually find me watching various sporting and musical events in which my current and former students are involved. I am a member of St. Joseph's Parish.  I love the St. Joe’s community and all of the staff, parents, and students that I have had the opportunity to work with over the years!

Terry Mathews: 3rd Grade

I am a 3rd grade teacher at St. Joseph School.  Upon completion of high school in Biwabik, Minnesota, I graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Social Studies. I have 23 years of teaching experience.  Seven of those years were in the public schools, ten years were at Assumption School in Hibbing, Minnesota, and the last six have been at St.Joseph.  My husband and I are members of St. Joseph Parish.

Nadine Metling: 3rd Grade

I love to see that sparkle in children’s eyes when I teach them something new.  That’s why I am still teaching after 26 years.  I graduated from Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota achieving a Bachelor of Science Degree with concentrations in Reading and Learning Disabilities.  My first four years I taught fourth grade, fifth grade, and Title I at Balaton Public School in Balaton and fourth grade at St. Kevin’s Catholic School in Minneapolis.  My family moved to Waconia and I became a part of St. Joseph School Staff.  I have been a third grade teacher at St. Joseph School for 22 years.  My son attended St. Joseph School.  My family are members of the St. Joseph Parish.

I graduated from the College of St. Benedict.  In 2001 I graduated from St. Mary's University with a Master's Degree in Education. I love being a teacher!  I have been teaching in Catholic Schools since 1995 in fourth and fifth grade classrooms.  I started teaching at St. Joseph School in 2001.  I chose to teach here because of my strong belief in the value of Catholic Education.  A Catholic Education is a gift.  The formation that takes place here is priceless.  My children attend St. Joseph School.

Julie Ludwig: MS Language Arts

I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education at St. Cloud State University. After teaching middle school near Washington D.C. for four years, I returned home to Waconia to teach at St. Joseph School. At St. Joe's, I have  taught grade five for four years, took a three year leave to be with my family, and enthusiastically returned. Since that time I have been teaching Middle School Language Arts. My children attend St. Joseph School.

I am a graduate of Bemidji State University. I received a Bachelors Degree in Spanish Education. My background includes two years of teaching Spanish at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Grand Rapids as well as four years of substitute teaching. I enjoy teaching at St. Joe's because we have wonderful families here who not only support the teachers, but also believe in our quality education.

Nancy Pearson: Music

I have been the Music Teacher at St. Joseph School for three years. I received my Bachelors of Science in Music Education from Minnesota State University, Mankato and my certificate of Kodaly Education from St. Thomas University. I have been a music teacher for twelve years, teaching a variety of grade levels from PreK through 12th grade. Besides teaching music at St. Joseph I am also the director of Sunday School music at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Hopkins, MN.  My children attend St. Joseph School.

Deacon Tim Harrer: Faith Formation

I have taught Middle and High School. With three additional education periods, I was in the corporate world of finance and management and the field of health care. I teach formation and instruction of Faith. Also, at this parish, I counsel,
instruct in sacraments, engage in pastoral ministry, preside, and am with
social out reach groups. I am always willing to preach Jesus and to preach
long and strong, as I believe completely.

Jenny Linn: Media Center

I firmly believe that every child can learn to love reading; it is simply a matter of getting the right book into their hands!! My undergraduate degree is from the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse where I majored in Therapeutic Recreation. I am currently working on my Masters in Library and Information Science at the College of St Catherine. This is my fourth year as the Library Coordinator at St. Joseph School. The staff and students at St. Joe’s are such a pleasure to work with. I am blessed to have a job that I truly love!!

Kayla Shafer: MS Band

I will be the St. Joseph band director for the 2008-2009 school year. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about myself and how Schmitt’s Strike Up the Band program will work at your school.

I graduated from St. Olaf College in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. I played clarinet, baritone, and piano in college and still try to play as much as I can. For the past three years, I have been teaching elementary/middle school band, giving private lessons, and working as a private teacher to a boy with special needs.

St. Joseph students will receive one half hour group lesson each week. There will be several opportunities for performing throughout the school year, including the Christmas and Spring programs, and Schmitt’s Spring Band Festival.

Lisa Whitaker: Technology Center

This will be my 14th year at St. Joseph's School.  It will be my 7th nonconsecutive year as Technology Coordinator.  I have my technology certification from the Archdiocese of Minneapolis/St. Paul.  I enjoy working with all the grade levels.  I was a guest speaker at Hamline University presenting webquest information.  I write many of the articles that are submitted to the local newspapers about St. Joe's.  I am also the Science Fair Coordinator.  If you are looking to challenge your child academically you may be interested in this program.  My children attend St. Joe's.  I love having my sons here and working here.  This is a great place to be.
